1. SVERIGES RIKSBANK PRIZE IN ECONOMIC SCIENCES IN MEMORY OF ALFRED NOBEL 2021
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2021 — often incorrectly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics — to three US-based economists.
About:
- A U.S. based Canadian David Card, Israeli-American Joshua Angrist and Dutch-American Guido Imbens won the Nobel Economics Prize for providing “new insights about the labour market” and showing “what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments”.
- Half of the prize went to Card, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley “for his empirical contributions to labour economics.” Card’s work has focused on labour market effects of minimum wages, immigration and education.
- The other half went jointly to Angrist, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Imbens, a professor at Stanford, “for their methodological contributions to the analysis of a causal relationship.

2. NITI AAYOG- UNDP HANDBOOK ON SUSTAINABLE URBAN PLASTIC WASTE MANAGEMENT
NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Rajiv Kumar has launched the NITI Aayog – United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Handbook on Sustainable Urban Plastic Waste Management in New Delhi.
About:
- It provides a comprehensive overview of managing plastic waste by representing and discussing components of the entire plastic waste value chain.
- The Handbook can be adopted by urban local bodies to good effect.
- NITI Aayog CEO, Amitabh Kant reiterated the significance of the Re-use, Reduce and Recycle model and the need to create a mass movement around the use of plastics.
Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
- NITI Aayog in this handbook has suggested urban local bodies across states adopt the material recovery facility (MRF) model & implement it as a public-private partnership model for sustainable management of urban plastic waste.
- A materials recovery facility, also known as a materials reclamation facility or recycling facility is a specialized plant that receives, separates, and prepares recyclable materials for marketing to end-user manufacturers.
- The model is initially funded by private players, supported by urban local bodies, and operated by service providers including local organizations and waste management agencies.
- this model ensures compliance with regulations and improves resource utilization.

3. TATARSTAN
An L-410 plane crashed near a city in Tatarstan region , killing 16 people and injuring seven.
About:
- The Republic of Tatarstan, or simply Tatarstan, is a republic of Russia located in Eastern Europe.
- It is a part of the Volga Federal District; and its capital and largest city is Kazan, one of the most important cultural centres of Russia.

4. CONFERENCE ON INTERACTION AND CONFIDENCE-BUILDING MEASURES IN ASIA (CICA)
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar arrived in Nur Sultan in Kazakhstan on the second leg of visit to Central Asia. Dr Jaishankar will attend the 6th Ministerial meeting of the Conference of Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Nur-Sultan. Kazakhstan is the current Chair and initiator of the CICA Forum.
About:
- It is an inter-governmental forum for enhancing cooperation towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.
Timeline
- CICA was established at the initiative of President Nursultan Nazarbayev of Kazakhstan outlined at the 47th UNGA in 1992.
- First Ministerial Meeting was held in September 1999 and First Summit was held in June 2002.
- The two founding documents of CICA are Declaration on the Principles Guiding Relations between the CICA Member States adopted at the First Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs held in Almaty on 14 September 1999 and the Almaty Act, charter of CICA, adopted at the First Summit held in Almaty on 4 June 2002.
Members
- To be a member of CICA, a state must have at least a part of its territory in Asia.
- Presently CICA has twenty-seven Member States. India has been associated with the CICA process and its activities since the Beginning.
- Nine countries and five multi-national organizations, including the United Nations, have observer status.
Administration
- The highest decision making organ of CICA is the Meeting of the CICA Heads of State and Government (Summit).
- The CICA Summit is convened every four years. The Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs is required to be held every two years.
- The CICA Secretariat - administrative body of CICA - is located in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan.

5. VISION PLAN (2021-2031) FOR INDIAN ZOOS
Union Environment Minister released the Vision Plan (2021-2031) for Indian zoos by Central Zoo Authority (CZA) to upgrade them to global standards and strengthening of Central Zoo Authority.
About:
- The vision document is committed to making CZA and Indian zoos a greater force for conservation by providing unparalleled animal care, cutting edge research, and immersive visitor experiences that strike meaningful chords with people of all ages.
- The exhaustive 10 years vision plan has been arrived at after a very stringent data mining and stakeholder consultive process and is expected to give a direction towards ex-situ conservation approaches in India.
- As on today there are more than 150 recognized zoos and rescue centers in the country that adhere to the guidelines and high standards of wild animal welfare.

6. CITRUS FRUIT
For boosting exports of citrus and its valued added products, the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ICAR-Central Citrus Research Institute (ICAR-CCRI), Nagpur.
About:
- The MoU envisages promoting export by focussing on creation of product specific clusters along with development of technologies by APEDA and ICAR-CCRI with a focus on efficient and precision farming.
- The MoU also aims at export promotion of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged Nagpur Orange) and organic citrus products from Maharashtra.
- For boosting value-addition and farmers’ income, APEDA has signed a series of MoUs with ICAR-Indian Institute of Millet Research (ICAR-IIMR), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore, University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore. National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED) and others.

7. SANDALWOOD
Union Minister of Rural Development & Panchayati Raj inaugurated a training program on Sandalwood Farming & Management of its health in association with the Institute of Wood Science & Technology (IWST), Bengaluru.
About:
- The program is structured around the basics & benefits of Indian sandalwood, seed handling, nursery techniques & managing the health of the plant.
- Sandalwood has been long associated with the Indian heritage & culture, as the country contributed 85% of the world’ sandalwood trade erstwhile. However, off late this has been declining at a fast rate. With anti-bacterial, anti-biotic & anti-cancer benefits amongst others, sandalwood finds its uses in pharmaceuticals, personal care & furnitures.
- Globally, India & Australia are the largest growers of sandalwood, while the biggest markets lie in the United States, China, Japan & the Indian domestic market. While in 2020 the world sandalwood market stood at USD 300 million, World Trade Research pegs the market size at USD 3 billion by 2040.

8. LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI NATIONAL AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE
Vice President of India presented Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence to Director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Dr. Randeep Guleria.
About:
- The Lal Bahadur Shastri National Award for Excellence was instituted by Lal Bahadur Shastri Institute of Management (LBSIM), Delhi, promoted by Lal Bahadur Shastri Educational Society.

9. NATIONAL GREEN TRIBUNAL (NGT)
The Supreme Court has declared the National Green Tribunal’s (NGT) position as a “unique” forum endowed with suo motu powers to take up environmental issues across the country.
About:
- The court said the NGT need not wait for the “metaphorical Godot” to knock on its portal to flex its considerable muscles to save the environment.
- The exercise of power by the NGT is not circumscribed by the receipt of applications.
- When substantial questions relating to the environment arise and the issue is civil in nature and those relate to the Act, the NGT, in our opinion, even in the absence of an application, can self-ignite action either towards amelioration or towards prevention of harm.
- Supreme court dismissed objections from the Centre, legal experts and even the court’s own amicus curiae who all argued against the NGT clothed with suo motu powers.
- The court explained that the role of the NGT was not simply adjudicatory in nature. The tribunal has to perform equally vital roles that were preventative, ameliorative or remedial in nature.
- The judgment described the NGT “as a complimentary, competent, specialised forum to deal with all environmental multidisciplinary issues both as original and also as an appellate authority, which complex issues were hitherto dealt with by the High Courts and the Supreme Court”.

10. PUBLIC ACCOUNTS COMMITTEE (PAC) OF PARLIAMENT
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has invited the Chairman of Pakistan’s Senate, Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, to attend the centennial celebration of the creation of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament. The invite has not been confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs yet.
About:
- The PAC is the oldest parliamentary committee in the Indian legislative affairs and has been crucial in upholding the principle of accountability as it exercises oversight of public expenditure.
- The Committee on Public Accounts is constituted by Parliament each year for examination of
- accounts showing the appropriation of sums granted by Parliament for expenditure of Government of India,
- the annual Finance Accounts of Government of India, and
- such other accounts laid before Parliament as the Committee may deem fit such as accounts of autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies (except those of Public Undertakings and Government Companies which come under the purview of the Committee on Public Undertakings).
- accounts showing the appropriation of sums granted by Parliament for expenditure of Government of India,
- The Committee on Public Accounts is the oldest Parliamentary Committee and was first constituted in 1921.
- The Committee consists of 22 Members, 15 Members are elected by Lok Sabha and 7 Members of the Rajya Sabha are associated with it.
- The Speaker is empowered to appoint the Chairman of the Committee from amongst its Members.
