1.Crime against Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs)
Recently, the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has published an annual Crime in India 2019 report.
Key Highlights
-
The crime against Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs) saw an increase of over 7% and 26% respectively in year 2019 as compared to 2018.
-
There is an increase of 7.3% cases that were registered for committing crime against SCs in 2019.
-
The report provided that Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of crimes against SCs in 2019, followed by Rajasthan and Bihar.

In the number of cases of rape of women belonging to SCs, Rajasthan topped the list followed by Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh.

There is an increase of 26.5% cases that were registered for committing crime against STs in 2019.

Madhya Pradesh recorded the highest number of cases against STs followed by Rajasthan and Odisha.
-
The highest number of incidents of rape of tribal women was registered in Madhya Pradesh followed by Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra.
- It showed an increase of 1.6% in registration of cases under Indian Penal Code (IPC), and Special and Local Laws (SLL).

There is an increase of 7.3% of cases of crime against women in 2019, as compared to 2018.

The crimes against SCs and STs include the atrocities committed by non-SC/ST members under the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities Act), 1989 (hereafter POA Act), the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Civil Rights Act, 1955.

2.Air India One
Recently, the Air India One has landed at the Indira Gandhi International Airport after undergoing retrofitment in the U.S. for more than two years.

It is India's first-ever VVIP plane.

It will be used by the President, Vice-President and Prime Minister.

It is one of the two Boeing 777-300 ERs, which joined Air India’s fleet in 2018.

It is equipped with missile warning sensors and counter-measures dispensing defence system.

The B777 planes will have state-of-the-art missile defence systems called Large Aircraft Infrared Countermeasures (LAIRCM) and Self-Protection Suites (SPS).

The two B777 aircraft will be operated by pilots of the Indian Air Force (IAF) and not of Air India.

3.Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG)
Recently, the Acquisition Wing of the Ministry of Defence has signed a contract with Economic Explosive Ltd. for the supply of 10 lakh Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG) to the Indian Army.
About Multi-Mode Hand Grenades (MMHG)

It uses preformed cylindrical mild steel pre-fragments to achieve uniform distribution.

It will be replacing the World War-II vintage ‘Mills Bomb’ type 36M hand grenades now used by the Army.
-
The MMHG can be used in two different structures resulting in two different modes i.e. defensive and offensive.
-
The offensive grenades do not fragment and the adversary is harmed by the blast or is stunned while the thrower is safe.
-
For the MMHG’s defensive mode, the grenade has a fragmenting sleeve and a lethal radius of 10 metres.

4.Aenigmachannidae
Recently, the researchers from the Indian Institute of Science, Education and Research (IISER), Pune, Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Studies (KUFOS), Nirmalagiri College in Kerala, Natural History Museums in London and Berne, along with Senckenberg Natural History Collections, Germany, have collectively discovered 'Aenigmachannidae'.
About Aenigmachannidae

It is a new family of bony freshwater fish has been discovered from paddy fields of Kerala.
-
The fish, with a long and elongated body, was sighted only post sunset along the paddy fields of Mallapuram district in north Kerala
-
It is believed that Aenigmachannidae fish has lineage going back to Gondwanaland and has survived even after the parting away of the Asian and African continents.
-
The fish has been declared as a ‘living fossil’ because of the CT scans and detailed analysis of the specimen led the scientific team to trace primitive characteristics.
-
The distinction in the newly discovered fish family was that it has remained subterranean i.e. unlike its sister species that have evolved and now thrive in surface water bodies commonly found in west, central Africa regions and Asia.

5.Tribal Entrepreneurship Development Programme
Recently, the Union Minister of Tribal Affairs has launched the 'Tribal Entrepreneurship Development Programme'.

It is aimed at ensuring the quality of life to the last man in the line and strengthening tribal entrepreneurship.

6.iMediX-Telemedicine System
Recently, the researchers at IIT Kharagpur’s Department of Computer Science & Engineering have developed a telemedicine system called iMediX.
About iMediX-Telemedicine System

The system integrates homecare with healthcare services from the hospital.

The system facilitates critical health care support to the patients at their doorsteps through remote consultation by a physician.
-
The system is accessible by any standard internet browser and also from a mobile device.
-
iMediX is being adopted for public use right at its home, IIT Kharagpur on-campus healthcare system.

7.Exercise Bongosagar
Recently, the second edition of Exercise Bongosagar is scheduled to be held in Northern Bay of Bengal.

It is an annual bilateral maritime exercise between Indian Navy and Bangladesh Navy.

It is aimed at developing inter-operability and joint operational skills through conduct of a wide spectrum of maritime exercises and operations.

India will be represeneted by INS Kiltan and INS Khukri whereas Bangladesh is represented by BNS Abu Bakr and BNS Prottoy.

The second edition of Exercise Bongosagar assumes greater significance since it is being conducted during Mujib Barsho, the 100th birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The first edition of Exercise Bongosagar was held in 2019.
INS KiltanIt is an indigenously-built anti-submarine warfare stealth corvette.It is the third of the four Kamorta-class corvettes being built under Project 28.It is designed by Directorate of Naval Design and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata.It is India’s first major warship to have a superstructure of carbon fibre composite material resulting in improved stealth features, lower top weight and maintenance costs.

The DMEO, Niti Aayog has undertaken DGQI exercise for the following purpose:

Self-assessment based review of data preparedness levels across Ministries / Departments to produce a DGQI score card;

Assessing data preparedness of Ministries / Departments on a standardized framework to drive healthy competition among them; and

Promote cooperative peer learning from best practices.

9.AYUSH GRID Project
Recently, the Ministry of AYUSH has endorsed the operational integration of AYUSH GRID Project with the National Digital Health Mission.
About AYUSH GRID Project

The project was initiated by the Ministry of AYUSH in 2018 for creating a comprehensive IT backbone for the entire sector.
-
It is conceptualized for digitalization of the entire AYUSH Sector.
-
It is aimed at connecting all hospitals and laboratories so that case histories and observations can be collated to generate evidence about the efficacy of the traditional systems of medicine, including Ayurveda.
