1. MANDA BUFFALO
The National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) has recognised the Manda buffalo, found in the Eastern Ghats and plateau of Koraput region of Odisha, as the 19th unique breed of buffaloes found in India.
About:
- The Manda are resistant to parasitic infections, less prone to diseases and can thrive on modest resources.
- This buffalo germ-plasm was first identified through a survey conducted by the Animal Resource Development (ARD) department of Odisha in collaboration with the Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT).
- The NBAGR is affiliated to Indian Council of Agriculture Research.

2. TRIBUNALS
A Special Bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana, said the Centre should fill the long-pending vacancies in key tribunals by the next hearing on September 13.
About:
- The Bench said tribunals across the country were on the verge of collapse. Cases were being adjourned by a year. Many operated with just one member as no appointments had been made for months, if not years.
- The court said it had three options: close the tribunals, make the appointments itself or initiate contempt.
- The court also said that the new law — Tribunal Reforms Act of 2021 — abolished nine key tribunals, raised a serious threat to judicial independence by giving the government wide powers regarding appointments, service conditions and salaries of members of key tribunals. The Bill was passed without parliamentary debate amid ruckus in the House.

3. ASHRAMWASIS
In October 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s proposal for a larger Sabarmati Ashram complex had caused much anxiety among its Trustees and residents, with the ashramwasis — third or fourth generation of ashram residents —sitting on protests fearing eviction.
Who are the ashramwasis?
- Descendants of the people who were brought into the Harijan Ashram that Mahatma Gandhi established on the bank of the Sabarmati river in 1917, to do various tasks and help run the ashram, and those who continued to stay on the premises, now controlled by one or the other trust, call themselves ashramwasis.
- They comprise all communities as Gandhi believed in ‘Sarva dharma sambhav’.
- Current residents include OBCs, Dalits, a few Muslims and some Brahmins.
- There are some 263 such families on the premises who are tenants of the respective trusts on whose land they reside and will have to be relocated in order to proceed with the Gandhi Ashram redevelopment plan as envisaged by the planners, which include the Government of Gujarat.

The original ashram
- On his return from South Africa, Gandhi established the first ashram at Kochrab in 1915 which he shifted after the plagueto a piece of open land on the banks of the river Sabarmati in 1917 for experiments in farming, animal husbandry, cow breeding, Khadi and related activities.
- Originally called Harijan Ashram, spread over 120 acres, the ashram was split into six trusts later.

5. COAL-BASED HYDROGEN PRODUCTION
Ministry of Coal Constitutes Task Force and Expert Committee to Prepare Road Map for Coal-based Hydrogen Production.

- On India’s 75th Independence Day, the Prime Minster announced a Hydrogen Mission. Coal is one of the important sources of hydrogen making (Brown Hydrogen) apart from Natural Gas (Grey hydrogen) and renewable energy (Green Hydrogen) through electrolysis.

6. BUJURGON KI BAAT–DESH KE SAATH
Union Minister of Culture launches program 'Bujurgon ki Baat–Desh Ke Saath'.
About:
- The programme 'Bujurgon ki Baat–Desh Ke Saath’ aims at enhancing the interaction between the youth and the elder persons who are 95 years and above and thus have spent around 18 years in India before independence.

7. GRIHA VARISHTHA
India Post Payments Bank (IPPB) under Department of Posts, Ministry of Communications and LIC Housing Finance Ltd (LICHFL), the country’s premier housing finance player, today announced a strategic partnership for providing home loan products to over 4.5 crore customers of IPPB.
About:
- Processing, and disbursement for all home loans will be handled by LICHFL with IPPB responsible for sourcing.
- The alliance with LICHFL is part of IPPB’s strategy to expand its range of products and services, and to cater to the banking and financial needs of diverse customers, especially unbanked and underserved, across the country.
- Currently, IPPB is distributing various general and life insurance products through partnerships with leading insurance companies, and credit products is a natural extension for the customers at the last mile.
- LICHFL’s unique home loan product – Griha Varishtha- is designed for retired or serving employees of PSU insurers, Central/State government, railways, defence, banks etc. entitled to pension under Defined Benefit Pension Scheme.
- The age of the borrower at entry of the loan can be up to 65 years and the loan tenure is till the attainment of 80 years of age or maximum up to 30 years, whichever is earlier.

8. E-SHRAM PORTAL
Since its launch on August 26, 2021, the government’s e-Shram portal registered 21 lakh unorganised sector workers, according to data on the Labour and Employment Ministry’s portal.
About:
- The government aims to register 38 crore unorganised workers, such as construction labourers, migrant workforce, street vendors and domestic workers, among others. The workers will be issued an e-Shram card containing a 12 digit unique number, which, going ahead, will help in including them in social security schemes, officials said.
- Portal will help build a comprehensive National Database of Unorganized Workers (NDUW) in the country. The government had earlier missed deadlines for creating the database, inviting criticism from the Supreme Court.
- The registration of workers on the portal will be coordinated by the Labour Ministry, state governments, trade unions and CSCs, officials said.
- A national toll free number — 14434 — will also be launched to assist and address the queries of workers seeking registration on the portal.

9. SMOG TOWER
Union Environment Minister said the number of cities with “improved air quality” had increased to 104 in 2020 from 86 in 2018 and attributed this to policies of the government. He was speaking at a public function to mark the International Day of Clean Air For Blue Skies.
About:
- However, the Environment Ministry’s own stand, on record in Parliament, has been that reduction in air pollution in 2020 was primarily due to the lockdown.
- To a question in the Lok Sabha on February 12, it said the COVID-19 related lockdown had resulted in a “temporary improvement” of air quality in many cities due to closure of industries, fewer vehicles plying, drop in construction activities and absence of human activities.
- Yadav also “virtually inaugurated” a smog tower at Anand Vihar, Delhi. A smog tower is designed as a large/medium scale air purifier to reduce pollution, usually by forcing the air through filters.

10. 13th BRICS SUMMIT
As part of India’s ongoing Chairship of BRICS in 2021, Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will chair the 13th BRICS Summit on 9 September 2021 in virtual format.
About:
- The theme for the Summit is ‘BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS cooperation for continuity, consolidation and consensus’.
- India had outlined four priority areas for its Chairship. These are Reform of the Multilateral System, Counter Terrorism, Using Digital and Technological Tools for achieving SDGs and Enhancing People to People exchanges.
- This is the second time Prime Minister Modi will be chairing the BRICS Summit. Earlier he had chaired the Goa Summit in 2016.
