Brave Story of Major Mukund Varadarajan
Mukund Varadarajan, born on April 12, 1983, in Chennai, India, was a distinguished officer in the Rajput Regiment of the Indian Army. He dedicated his life to serving his country with unwavering courage and bravery. Tragically, Major Mukund Varadarajan made the ultimate sacrifice while leading an anti-terrorist operation in the Shupiyan district of Jammu and Kashmir. This operation saw him confront and eliminate three terrorists from the Hizbul Mujahideen.
Early Life and Military Career
Major Mukund Varadarajan hailed from a family with a rich tradition of military service. His grandfather and two uncles had served in the army, instilling in him a deep sense of duty and patriotism. After completing his education, including a Bachelor of Commerce from Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Viswa Mahavidyalaya and a diploma in journalism from the Madras Christian College, Mukund followed his family's footsteps by joining the army.
He cleared UPSC Combined Defence Examination (CDS), in 2005 and underwent training at the Officers Training Academy, Chennai before serving at the Infantry School in Mhow, Madhya Pradesh. Commissioned as a Lieutenant in the Rajput Regiment in 2006, Mukund's career was marked by dedication and excellence. His commitment to service saw him participate in a United Nations mission in Lebanon, where he honed his skills and demonstrated his leadership abilities.
The Sacrifice and Legacy
On April 25, 2014, Major Mukund Varadarajan led a courageous operation to neutralize terrorists threatening civilian lives in the Shupiyan district. Despite coming under heavy fire, he displayed remarkable bravery and strategic acumen, eliminating three high-ranking terrorists. Tragically, Mukund sustained grievous injuries during the operation and ultimately succumbed to his wounds.
Because of his extraordinary valor and selfless sacrifice, Major Mukund Varadarajan was posthumously awarded the Ashok Chakra, India's highest peacetime gallantry award. His exemplary leadership, raw courage, and swift action in the face of danger exemplified the finest traditions of the Indian Army.
